Scolecto

placeholder image

Scolecto are parasitic, wormlike creatures. Their head is only about the size of a quarter, but their segmented bodies can grow up to six feet long! They've adapted to survive on magical energy rather than physical nutrients, but they produce very little on their own. Instead, they absorb it from any suitable host they can find. The three appendages on their head can be used to grip onto their hosts externally, and they will remain attached until removed. In the meantime, their hosts will suffer from decreased magical ability and fatigue. Scolecto are often found dangling from trees or the eaves of houses while they wait for a host to drop onto and attach themselves to.

The segmented bodies of scolecto grow from the head. They will gradually drop or tear off over time, leaving their "tail" in tatters. Each dropped segment contains scolecto eggs! They leave these behind to hatch and grow on their own.

Though not traditionally kept as pets due to their parasitic nature, scolecto have been growing in popularity among dedicated invertipet keepers. Magical batteries are a fairly common occurrence for magical devices in this setting, and scolecto are able to safely feed from them! They're occasionally even used as a cleanup crew when vast quantities of magical energy are present in an area.
